2015 Board of Directors Election Candidates

Billie Hwang

My name is Billie Hwang and the coach/founder of Absolute Zero VBC and Volleyballogy Training Clinics. Recently, my peers have nominated me as a potential candidate for the Board in the Puget Sound region and I’m incredibly humbled and honored. I have an extensive playing history in volleyball and continue to play at a high level. But within the last 4 years, I’ve been stricken with the “coaching bug.” What I noticed amongst players in this region is a lack of fundamental/mechanics training along with early burnout from volleyball. With those observations came the development of Volleyballogy and my club, Absolute Zero. The mantra of both, teach fundamental volleyball in a fun environment without the pressures of always having to win. I use failure as a tool for skills development and focus on building self-confidence. I teach a cerebral approach to volleyball and really emphasize that volleyball is a life sport.

As much as I love volleyball, my other passion in life is science and medicine. I’m currently a “baby PI” of a UW lab with research focus on cancer and solid organ transplant immunology. I’m completed my masters and currently working on my PhD. Eventually, when my volleyball days are over, I plan on heading to medical school to become a pediatric oncologist.

Kyle Densley
My reasons for seeking a board position for the Puget Sound USAV region are; use my USAV cap 3 training to strengthen the Coaching, and players in our region, by implementing new methods of teaching, and training, for coaches and players throughout the region. So that we can start to achieve the greatness of our abilities in this great region. New innovative ideas, consistent demand for growth, sharing ideas, then actually implementing them.

Coach Kyle Densley; current Head Women’s Volleyball Coach, Green River College, beginning my 10th year, Owner Co-Director, Head Coach, Pacific Coast Volleyball Academy 14 years, current Cap 3 for USA volleyball, H.P. National Junior Girls and Boys evaluator for National H.P. programs, also have been lead tryout coach for National H.P. tryouts. Coach experience 36 years, from Division 1 Women’s, too, Boy’s H.S., Girl’s H.S., Jr. High, and U-11s. Have played for 44 years, and still playing!

SO LETS HAVE SOME SERIOUS FUN PLAYING AND GROWING VOLLEYBALL IN THE PUGET SOUND REGION!

Angela Spoja

Angela Spoja has been a part of Puget Sound Region for over 20 years. She has spent three years on the board and would like to continue in her current position. Currently she is the Vice Chair and Head of the Ethics and Eligibility Committee. As a coach and club director, Angela has noticed that the club tryout process can be unnecessarily difficult on families and players. Therefore, she has worked hard with the board to produce a post-tryout survey that will be instrumental in helping our region offer a better tryout experience. She loves seeing the region grow and would like to continue to make positive changes within the region.

Angela Spoja joined Evergreen State College in 2013 as the women’s head coach, after a successful eight-year run at Tacoma Community College. A three-time NWAACC Coach of the Year, she led the Titans to a record of 155-60, including undefeated marks in league in both 2007 and 2010. Spoja has led over 150 athletes to the Div.1, 2 and NAIA colleges to play volleyball through TCC and through club. Spoja is the co-director of South Sound Volleyball Club in Tacoma.

Spoja started playing volleyball at Steilacoom High and went on scholarship to Eastern Washington University. Spoja graduated from Eastern with a BA in Criminal Justice. From there traveled with AVP and AVP next in sand volleyball. Formed “No Limit” the top women’s team in the Puget Sound Region and have had many top finishes at the Adult National Championships. Has had top finishes at the infamous “Seaside Tournament” in women’s open.

Greg Finel

I have spent the majority of my adult life involved in volleyball. I fell in love with the sport shortly after high school and continued to play at Eastern for the club team and to compete outdoors. This passion for the sport has grown into a love for coaching and has given me the opportunity to coach high school for 4 years and club for 5 years in Puget Sound Region. I believe that it is equally important to develop the player and the person and that being a coach and mentor does not stop when the gym lights turn off. If elected to the board I would like to assist in growing the sport with a greater focus on the younger ages and to assist in finding ways to ensure that that we are not forgetting to develop and grow the person, not just the player.

Andrew Mcallister

Hello my name is Andrew McAllister. I began playing volleyball on the beaches of Santa Cruz, CA when I was 7 years old. I’ve the bug ever since, and I consider myself a “Volley Dork”. I played volleyball through HS and collegiately at Simpson University. I have a Master’s degree from UW in Education with an emphasis on Sports Management.

Currently, I am the Director of Eastside Volleyball Academy, where I am the Head Coach of the 18’s team. I currently have a USAV CAP II certification, with my CAP III in progress. I am involved in the sport at the national level as a USAV High Performance Coach, as well as a collegiate-level referee and high school coach in the Puget Sound Region. I am SafeSport & TrueSport certified. Outside of my wife & 3 sons, volleyball is my passion.

As a board member, I would like to focus on increasing the level of education for our coaches in the Puget Sound Region, including mandatory SafeSport certification for ALL Region-affiliated coaches, and baseline concussion testing for athletes, which would enable coaches & health-care professionals to make more informed decisions in regards to returning to practice and school. I am also excited about being a member of the PSR Boys Developmental Program. I would greatly appreciate your vote for the PSR Board! Thank you!
